Hi Kim,
How exciting! Two years ago my husband and I participated in the
Surfing Program at Typhoon Lagoon with our two sons. Guests who are at least 8 years old can learn how to surf in a fun, safe, controlled environment as they "Hang 10" in the waters of Disney's Typhoon Lagoon! None of us had ever surfed before and it was amazing how quickly everyone learned. You'll have your choice of riding big waves or small ones and you can opt to try both if you would like.
The one challenge is that there is not a professional photographer there to take photos for you. In addition, the two instructors can not take pictures for you because they are busy with the class. Spectators are welcome, so can bring your family and friends to watch and take photos for you. We didn't have any extra adults to bring along, so what we did is we made sure that we were spread far enough apart in our entry into the water that one of us was taking photos while the others were in the pool. If it is just the two of you, I recommend that you give your son a quick photography lesson (and make sure you bring a cheap camera). The other program participants are usually more than willing to take a few photos for you if you offer to do the same for them.
I hope this answers your questions! Please feel free to let me know if I can assist you further. We had such an awesome time together and we all highly recommend this experience for guests looking for something a little different on their Disney vacation.
