Hi Mona Leigh, Looking at a Disney trip (kids 7 and 11) for the first time-there seem to be lots of details to take care of in advance. Pros and cons of either going in 2-3 weeks or waiting six months? Will we have trouble getting reservations this close?

    Hi Kristen,

I am happy to help you plan your kids' first trip to Walt Disney World! While you can plan a trip for two to three weeks from now, I would suggest planning six months ahead if you can. This will give you more time to become familiar with all that there is to do at Walt Disney World, and to be sure that you have planned for everything you want to do. I suggest that you order the Walt Disney World Planning video. It is available free of charge, and your family can watch it to see what attractions and experiences you want to be sure to do. Then, I suggest the following timeline.

First, book your accommodations. Especially for your first trip, I recommend that you stay at a Walt Disney World resort hotel, from which you can take advantage of perks such as free and frequent transportation to the Disney theme parks. When you book, you can decide if a package that includes your Disney theme park tickets and a dining plan makes sense for you, or if you prefer to do these separately.

You will need to set up a My Disney Experience account to manage your reservations. Through this, you can also make Disney Dining reservations at 180 days ahead of your vacation. Also, once you have theme park admission linked in your My Disney Experience account, you will be able to make Disney FastPass+ selections 60 days ahead if you are staying at a Walt Disney World resort hotel and 30 days ahead if you are not.

I would love to help you plan more Kristen; however, I am limited in the space that I have to answer. Please do write back if you have any further questions!
