Mom (36), both knees "scoped" 6 weeks ago,w/ fam for our 1st time 11/29-12/04. Walking ok- but so much standing and walking will be tough. Is there assistance available, would a wheel chair limit my access to rides, I want to ride the big rides

    Kathy:

My father is a paraplegic, and so I'm more keen than most folks to accessibility, and I can tell you Disney is one of the friendliest destinations for mobility issues I've ever seen! A wheelchair by no means will limit you at there.

A close friend of mine just visited Disney two weeks ago, and I recommended he rent a scooter (Disney calls them ECVs) because he had a knee brace.  He laughed and said his kids would give him fits.  Well, I was the one trying not to laugh when he called me on his cell phone from the Magic Kingdom asking me how he could get a scooter after only one day at the park!

I recommend NOT getting a wheelchair, as someone in your party will be responsible for not only maneuvering you through the crowd, but also expending a lot of energy to do it.  An ECV is the way to go.  Don't feel embarrassed, as you'll see other park guests with casts, boots, canes, and well, just some extra pounds using them to make their experience more enjoyable.  You can simply park it in the area where each attraction houses strollers, or on some rides, you can roll right up to the cue and transfer and even a few others where you can roll directly on the ride, lock it down and not even get off!  (Take a look at the park guide to let you know which rides require transfers, etc.)

I saw many scooters on my recent trip from Buena Vista Scooters, but please do not take this as an endorsement, as I've never rented from them.  However, looking them up online, their prices were slightly cheaper than Disney's which are around $45 a day.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
