Hello Jacob!
Welcome to planDisney! The new updates to the My Disney Experience app have been something I have been waiting for! I am always trying to figure out how to change my
Lightning Lane selections as my plans change throughout the day.
I have flown down from New York plenty of times and I understand that travel can be unpredictable but thankfully not too long. If you are going to hit the ground running and head straight for the Parks right after you land then purchasing
Genie+ is a very smart move. You don't have to be in the Parks to start booking that first Lightning Lane selection at 7 am. If you do not like the times being offered as they may be too early I would just keep refreshing until a better time appears. (Just pull down on the screen and release to reload some new time slots) If you still don't like the options then I would select a Lightning Lane for the ride that you want but could run out of selections if you wait too long. For example, I would choose
Peter Pan's Flight or
Splash Mountain as these are the top two rides I am hoping to experience on my next trip but are also extremely popular. If my selection ends up with the time slot of 10 am to 11 am I would begin trying to modify it at 8 am to see if a later time can occur. If I still don't find something that works best I would try again at 9 am. Since my next reservation can be booked two hours after the Park opening which is 8 am tomorrow at
Magic Kingdom Park then I can book my second Lightning Lane selection at 10 am. If you are confused about what time you can book your next Lightning Lane selection, the new update to the app now provides a time on top you can refer to as to when you can do that! Make sure to set an alarm so you don't lose track of time.
I hope you are not in the air with no wifi but if that is the case I would not do what I just said and be safe and book something with a much later return window time slot. Missing a Lightning Lane entirely will result in you not being able to book another one for the same ride. However, once the appropriate time elapses you can book another ride. My suggestion is to be strategic with the Lightning Lane bookings and aim to keep modifying to a time you know you will make it. This sounds intense but as a fellow New Yorker we are used to operating at higher speeds and I'm sure you will do great.
