Are magic bands already charged right out of the box or do I need to charge them?

Hi there, Shelly!  Welcome to planDisney!

When I arrive at the Walt Disney World Resort, one of the first things I do is put on my MagicBand+.  This little device is not only a cute fashion accessory, but it also simplifies so many aspects of your Walt Disney World Resort vacation.  Your MagicBand+ can be used to enter the theme parks (with valid theme park admission), access Lightning Lane entrances (with the purchase of the Disney Genie+ service), and link your DisneyPhotoPass pictures to your My Disney Experience account.  Also, if you're a Disney Resorts Collection Guest, you can use MagicBand+ to unlock your resort hotel room door and charge purchases to your room.  In addition to all of these practical functions, MagicBand+ also unlocks lots of fun interactive surprises throughout the theme parks.

While most of the basic functions of your MagicBand+ will work before you charge your band, you'll want to charge it right out of the box for all of those cool interactive features to work.  If you order your MagicBand+ through a Disney Resorts Collection reservation, your band should already be linked to your My Disney Experience profile.  You can check on this (or link your band if you purchased it in a retail location) using your My Disney Experience mobile app.

First, charge your MagicBand+ for a couple of hours, then open your My Disney Experience mobile app.  Click on the three lines in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and then select "MagicBands and More."  Next, click on your profile to view the MagicBands that are assigned to you.  If you do not see the MagicBand+ that you wish to use, click "Link" to add a different band.  You can use your app to connect a MagicBand+ to your phone's Bluetooth, run a software update on your band, and check if your MagicBand+ is fully charged.

I usually charge my MagicBand+ the day before I leave for a Walt Disney World Resort trip, as well as each night during my trip.  You might be able to get a bit longer out of a fully charged band, but I like to charge mine each night just to be on the safe side.  I have also heard that to keep your MagicBand+ in good condition, you should periodically charge it every few months when you are at home as well.

Shelly, I hope that this information is useful as you get ready for your upcoming trip.  If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.  Wishing you a happy holiday season and a magical Walt Disney World Resort vacation!
