I have a Magic Band from several years back. Guessing a Magic Band+ is a completely different device. Can you explain the differences and if my older band is useable?

Hey there, Chad, and welcome back to planDisney!

We're happy to see you back here again and appreciate you bringing another question to us. Like you, I'm a fellow photographer and tech nerd, so I always appreciate when a new device is released which offers quality of life improvements when visiting the Parks.

I want to answer the latter question first and say that, at the current time, the Disneyland Resort only supports MagicBand+. So if you're headed to the Happiest Place on Earth and would like to enjoy the features offered by MagicBand+, you're going to have to pick up an updated Band. That's easy to do, thanks to home shipping from disneystore.com or stopping by these locations once on property.

Now as for the features, MagicBand+ added haptic feedback vibrations and customizable lighting depending on your location and/or nearby entertainment (it goes crazy during World of Color!). MagicBand+ is also now rechargeable, unlike previous versions of MagicBands. But I think the most exciting feature is the addition of Park experiences that you can't get with the older versions. My favorite is Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters, which has you using your MagicBand+ as a locator to track down various bounties around Galaxy's Edge. MagicBand+ retains all of the features that were included with older versions (scanning your ticket at the Entrance, redeeming Lightning Lanes, linking PhotoPass pictures), and you're still able to use your older Band when you visit Walt Disney World. Over at the Disneyland Resort, they have not yet implemented the ability to use our MagicBand+ as a hotel room key or for payments, so I'm awaiting those eagerly!

Chad, I hope that this response was helpful and informative for you as you decide on a MagicBand+. There are some really cool designs out there and Disney is always releasing new Bands for every taste. If you have any more questions for us, please return again anytime.  You're always welcome at planDisney!

Wishing You a Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow!

Meet the Panelist: Al, California

Ahoy there from the heart of Steinbeck Country in central California! I've been visiting the Disneyland Resort since childhood and fell in love with the sense of absolute immersion that the Imagineers have achieved. My favorite attraction is Pirates of the Caribbean because where else can you go from a California day to an evening boat ride in the bayou with "salty old pirates"? I'm a veterinarian and an all-around Disney geek and enthusiast. I'd love to help you plan your next Disneyland trip! Learn More About Al
