Is the Magic Band a must have?

    Hi Debbie, welcome to planDisney!

Your Walt Disney World Resort vacation countdown has reached the single digits - congratulations! You are officially in the "too excited to sleep" zone and I suggest using your sleepless nights to catch up on the planDisney podcast. The most recent episode digs into the details of the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays.

MagicBands are the magical wrist accessories that let you tap into Disney magic at theme park entry, at Lightning Lane entrances, and with Disney PhotoPass photographers during your park days. Newer MagicBand+ designs even interact with attractions and nighttime spectaculars. Guests staying at a Disney Resort hotel can also use their MagicBand as a room key and a method of payment that connects to their Guest folio.

MagicBands are an option, not a necessity, for your upcoming trip. Other ways to access the magic include Disney MagicMobile passes and admission cards. I personally love the hands-free convenience that MagicBands provide. On my most recent park day, I used my MagicBand at least 10 times and appreciated not having to dig around in my wallet or take out my cell phone each time. My children, on the other hand, do not like wearing things on their wrists. They prefer using admission cards, which we put in retractable badge holders for maximum independence in the parks. My husband prefers downloading a Disney MagicMobile pass and using his Apple Watch as a MagicBand on our park days.

MagicBand+ designs must be linked to a My Disney Experience account, paired to a mobile device, and fully charged before use. As such, if you decide to purchase a MagicBand, Debbie, I recommend doing so online or at Disney Pin Traders in Disney Springs before your first park day. Guests staying at a Disney Resort hotel receive a pre-arrival discount on MagicBands if they order from the "My MagicBands and Cards" page of their My Disney Experience account.

My recommended must-haves for a successful park day include the My Disney Experience mobile app, a portable charger for your phone, and sunscreen. Minnie ears are optional but highly encouraged!

    Plan magic; planDisney.
