Hi Lynn - we are driving down from Kemptville in September .. have you ever driven and if so can you give some pointers (time to leave, where to stop, etc) My husband is a truck driver and thinks we can drive straight through - I am not so sure. Thanks

    Hi Neighbour!

Yes I have driven to the Most Magical Place on Earth by car quite a number of times - as a kid and as a parent with kids.  It takes us EXACTLY 24 hours to make the trip - 20 hours to get to the border of Florida, plus another 3-4 hours to Walt Disney World (these numbers include stops for food & washrooms).

I do know people who drive it straight through, but my husband and I get too tired and just can't do it!  So this is what we do:  We leave one evening after work, maybe 4-5 pm.  Crossing at the Thousand Islands Bridge, we take Interstate 81 through New York.  We drive about 6 hours that evening and that gets us just about to the border of Pennsylvania.  The next day is our long one - we head out by 7 am and drive until about 8 or 9 pm, so we get another 14 hours driving behind us (we like that we can go through the mountains in Pennsylvania in the daylight!).  This second night we stay midway through Georgia (along Interstate 95).

Then the next day it is smooth sailing - only another 4 hours to Walt Disney World!  We are there by mid-day, which is great because we are all so excited to get there.

We have also tried 2 full days of driving but find it hard.  What we like about this way is that it is only one long day, which is not hard on the kids. It also lets us sleep in a hotel and maybe have a swim...to shake off the stiffness of being in the car so long.

Suna, drop me a line if I can answer any more questions.  I am getting excited just thinking about your trip!  Have a magical family time together!

Walt Disney World stole my heart when my parents introduced me to the magic the year it opened. I fondly remember my first 'Mickey Mouse in a Glass House' balloon! I still visit with my parents-and now with my husband and our two teens. Learn More About Lynn
