I also love Jodi Picoult and my youngest son has down syndrome! We are planning a visit in Oct. and wonder if we will be able to utilize the 'handicap' pass for him even though he is only 2. Any tips to help me with him wanting to walk all the time?

Well hi there Shannon, my long lost sister!  Have you read Jodi Picoult's newest book yet?  I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Here's what you need to know about the special assistance card: age alone won't necessarily qualify or disqualify your son in using it.  You'll need to stop in at Guest Services upon entering the first park you visit during your stay.  Have a chat with the Cast Member about the specific limitations your son has.  It sounds like he is walking just fine (yay!) but perhaps he has other issues that make it difficult for your family to tour the parks.  The Cast Member will help in any way he or she can to ensure that your son's visit is magical, disability or not. :)

As far as his wanting to walk all the time, first of all: HOORAY!  That's awesome.  Though I can understand how it would be challenging at WDW.  The nice thing is that you'll find plenty of spots within the parks where you can let him get out of the stroller and run around for a bit.  Those brilliant Imagineers have even included playgrounds for the wee ones.  Take those opportunities to let him strut his stuff.  Also, you might consider bringing little containers of bubbles (in a non-spillable container) and play-doh to help keep him occupied while he is confined to the stroller.  And he'll be getting some Speech therapy and OT in the process.

Hope I've helped some!  Have an amazing time!

Given your inclination to plan a magical trip, I can already tell we have a lot in common. I'm Darcie, and my friends would be the first to tell you that Disney trip planning (especially dining!) is my love language. Of course, the vacations my family enjoys today look much different than they did when our kids were little, but while some of our favorite activities have evolved, Disney destinations still top our travel wish lists. Let's work together to plan a downright dreamy vacation for your family! Learn More About Darcie
