looking for place to stay with 6 adults and 2 kids (6&5). Likes the cabins at Fort Wilderness but only can fit 6. Money is somewhat limited (not willing to go too expensive. Any suggestions? Want to be close to Magic Kingdom and least amount of travel

My suggestion, Wendy, would be to opt for two rooms in one of Disney's value or moderate resorts.  The most economical of these two options would be found in choosing the value resort.  The value resorts are quite a distance from the Magic Kingdom, but the flip-side of that is that guests staying in the closest proximity to the Magic Kingdom pay a premium to do so.  Opting for a moderate would cost you a bit more, but it would come with some additional amenities like more detailed theming, on-site restaurant, and recreational opportunities (think along the lines of water sports and surrey bike rentals).  Port Orleans Riverside is a favorite of mine for its gorgeous grounds and cozy charm.  Unfortunately, by opting for a value or moderate, the trade-off is going to be that transportation time to the theme parks will be increased.  Good luck with your decision!
