Such a coincidence to get your question! I just finished booking a cabin for our family for May at Fort Wilderness! This will be the first time we have stayed in one and I can't wait. It is a totally different experience then a resort hotel and you have at your finger tips many new and fun things to enjoy.
There are three internal buses that run through-out Fort Wilderness to enable you to reach the recreation and stores and dining facilities. You can also rent a golf cart to go from one point to the next within the area. Rates change but they have been running about $47 for daily rental or $12 for hourly rentals. To reach all points beyond Fort Wilderness besides the Magic Kingdom you can catch a bus at the Outpost Depot. To reach the Magic Kingdom you take the boat launch.
There are two places to buy your basic groceries within Fort Wilderness: the Meadow and the Settlement Trading Posts. There are also full dining restaurants as well as carry-out opportunities.
The value is based on your needs and what works best for your family. The ability to have a kitchen is very enticing to many families to cut costs while on vacation.
Fort Wilderness is unique and a quiet refuge from the crowds. You will feel like you are in a different place when you return to the peacefulness of your cabin. I know friends who said that once they tried it they knew they would never want anything else...no early morning wake-up calls from excited children running up and down halls. To read a great description of this accommodation and all of its unique dining and recreation options go to

Good luck with all of your decisions! I am excited about our own trip there in May.
