Hi there, Rachael!
Welcome to planDisney! While my kids are reaching tween status, I always plan at least one character dining experience during a Disneyland Resort vacation. You're never too old for a hug from some of your favorite pals! I definitely waited in line by myself for a hug from Minnie on our last Disney Cruise aboard the Wish this past summer!
I'm happy to report that when booking a character dining experience, you are guaranteed to have a quick meet and greet with some familiar faces whether those meals are inside or outside of the parks. While the specific characters will rotate in and out, you can get a sense of who to expect by reading the descriptions on the Disneyland website. Currently, the following character dining experiences are offered:
- Minnie and Friends - Breakfast in the Park - This is one of my favorites as it's located at the Plaza Inn inside Disneyland Park just off to the right as your stroll down Main Street, U.S.A. towards Sleeping Beauty Castle. As the name suggests, you'll meet Minnie and some beloved Disney friends. Note that characters only appear during breakfast at the Plaza Inn and all Guests are required to have valid theme park admission on the day of your reservation.
- Mickey's Tales of Adventure Breakfast Buffet is located at Storytellers Café inside Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa. Typically, you will meet Mickey and a rotating cast of friends while feasting on an all-you-care-to-enjoy breakfast buffet! The location is also breathtaking with high ceilings and Craftsman-style architecture. It's cozy and the pace can be a bit calmer than other character experiences, in my opinion.
- Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures is also inside Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa at Napa Rose. This is truly an immersive experience for any young prince and princess in your party. You'll have meet and greets with several princesses and even get to participate in activities alongside them. I know in the past Belle has invited the youngest guests to a special story time and Mulan has led lessons in warrior poses!
- Finally, my personal favorite is Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this is a classic and nostalgic spot for my family. You'll meet Goofy upon arrival and take quick photo before being escorted to your table. While you enjoy the buffet, characters will come to each table for a quick hello. In my experience, I've met Chip, Dale, Pluto and Minnie! It's a very lively experience!
My best tip is to reserve one of the resort character dining experiences on your arrival or departure day - a day when you don't plan to be in the parks. This adds just the right touch of magic especially if you are saying farewell!
Advanced dining reservations can generally be made up to 60 days in advance, and it's highly recommended to make them as soon as that date rolls around. Time with the characters is highly coveted and these reservations can fill up! My rule of thumb is to make the reservation, and then decide later if it still makes sense as your trip gets closer. Make note of the cancellation policy and set a reminder for yourself to review your selections ahead of those dates.
Rachael, I hope you have the most magical time! Give Mickey a hug for me!
Magic awaits,
Tara
