Hi! Long-time WDW guest, first time staying at AKL! Traveling with my grandparents in May, and wondering if there are any specific things we should do while we are there? We have a full rest day to explore the resort! Thanks so much!!

    Hi Jennifer,

Welcome to planDisney! I love that you and your grandparents are going to experience a stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge together. It's such a beautiful resort, and you can easily find so many ways to rest, relax, learn and savor the moment during your stay.

First things first: You can begin booking dining reservations for your visit on March 12, 2026, and I would suggest you make your reservations as soon as possible. Animal Kingdom Lodge is home to three of my family's favorite restaurants in all of Walt Disney World -- Sanaa, Boma and Jiko.

At Sanaa, you dine overlooking the savannah and can watch the animals graze as you feast on dishes with an African influence. Do not miss the bread service! At the Boma buffet, you have the choice of dozens of delicious meats, soups, salads, side dishes and desserts. The famous zebra domes are a must. And at Jiko, choose from signature dishes including steak, seafood and vegetarian options along with an extensive wine list.

You can't go wrong at any of the three. (If any of you are vegetarians, Boma and Sanaa are especially veggie-friendly.)

For a happy hour cocktail or mocktail or a nightcap with a snack, we love Victoria Falls Lounge in the Jambo House lobby.

Now for non-food activities: Outside of Sanaa, which is in the Kidani Village section of the resort, you'll be able to get an up-close view of the animals, and there's often a knowledgeable cast member there to tell you about what you are seeing.

Over in Jambo House, you can participate in a free tour each weekday morning that highlights the African art displayed throughout the lobby and adjacent hallways. You will find the time for that tour and a list of other recreational activities on the weekly schedule. (I've always wanted to try the Wild About Painting class.)

One of my favorite things to do at Animal Kingdom Lodge is to grab a cup of coffee and one of the rocking chairs on a balcony overlooking the savannah. I can spend hours there just relaxing. A nice poolside deck chair with an umbrella is also a wonderful way to unwind in the beautiful surroundings.

Or, if you want a little adventure in your evening, you can consider the Starlight Safari, which leaves from Animal Kingdom Lodge and takes guests on an after-dark excursion into the savannah. Booking for this Enchanting Extra also opens for you on March 12.

Thanks for your question, Jennifer. As you can see, you will have no trouble filling your day at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Please let us know if you have any other questions as you start making your reservations and firming up you plans.

    Enjoy every magical moment,

    Wilma
