My little brother and I are going to Disney World to celebrate my graduation. I was wondering what are the differences between genie plus and lightning lane. What would be better price wise and which would you recommend more?

Hi there, Sophia, and welcome to planDisney!

Congrats on your graduation; that is very exciting news! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this new beginning, and I love that your brother will be joining you on this most magical vacation. I am more than happy to help you decide which path to take when it comes to Disney Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane purchases.

Before we go too far down the rabbit hole, let’s talk about Lightning Lanes. Both Disney Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes will give you access to Lightning Lanes, shorter queues for attractions at Walt Disney World Resort.

Now, let’s start with Disney Genie+, which you can purchase starting at midnight the day of your theme park reservation. Then, you can make your first Lightning Lane selection at 7 a.m. Disney Genie+ gives you access to several classic attractions and new favorites across the theme parks. It’s a one-stop shop for the majority of the rides’ Lightning Lanes. Once you’ve checked into one of your rides, you can make your next selection.

Then, there’s Individual Lightning Lane. As a local who rides most of the rides whenever I can, I opt for this option most of the time. Purchase an Individual Lightning Lane for those super popular attractions that usually have longer wait times and aren’t included in the Disney Genie+ selections. This includes newer attractions like EPCOT’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Magic Kingdom Park’s TRON Lightcycle / Run. It’s a pay-per-ride system.

The prices for each option vary, and there’s a wide range of what you could pay. For example, let’s say that Disney Genie+ for the day and theme parks that you visit is $20, but you’re also considering getting access to the Lightning Lanes for TRON Lightcycle / Run and Avatar: Flight of Passage. You could decide to only use Disney Genie+, pay only $20, and wait in the standby/virtual queues for the other two rides to save money. Or you could purchase both Genie+ and those two attractions’ Individual Lightning Lanes. There are so many combinations!

All in all, if you’d rather get in a ton of rides, go for Disney Genie+, but if you’d rather check off those super popular rides and wait for all the others, go for Individual Lightning Lanes.

Sophia, if you have any other questions or need suggestions as you plan your celebration, revisit us here at planDisney. I’m all ears!

    Magic always,
