Hi Elizabeth!
Lucky you! Can you believe that you will be in the most magical place on Earth so soon??? As you know, the resorts are broken down into room categories. Port Orleans French Quarter is broken down into three categories based on their view. The Standard View rooms have a view of the parking lot, the Garden View rooms look out over the beautiful landscaping and the Water View rooms will give you a view of the Sassagoula River or the pool.
The standard rooms found in buildings Three and Four are the closest to the lobby and food court. However, because Port Orleans French Quarter is the smallest of the Moderate Resorts, there really is so such thing as a bad room! Because you are traveling in January, one of the least crowded months at WDW, you may be in luck. I have always been lucky when getting free upgrades when I travel during this month. Of course, Disney will want me to tell you that the chance of receiving an upgrade at no additional cost is highly unlikely. However, in my personal experience, I have found that it never hurts to ask! I would advise that you make your friendly inquiry at check-in.
I recently found a great website dedicated entirely to both sections of the
Port Orleans Resort. I could spend hours just reading that site alone! Also,
Allearsnet.com has tons of photos, reviews and even menus. So grab a seat by one of their many fountains and enjoy!
Much pixie dust,
Jackie S.
