Hi Jennifer,
I'm always disappointed when one of my favorite attractions is closed for refurbishment during my visits. But I know that means that when it reopens it will be even more awesome than before which means I have an excuse to go back to Disney World!
Star Tours at
Disney's Hollywood Studios is indeed an awesome attraction for Star Wars fans. It is currently undergoing a major refurbishment & isn't scheduled to reopen until sometime in the spring of 2011. When the all-new Star Tours reopens, it will take Guests to destinations in 3-D.
The Jedi Training Academy (JTA) is still being held. When I last visited, they were having people sign up 1st thing in the morning for the sessions. I'd recommend that you be at the gate when the park opens & heading there first to sign up. They could change this before your visit but I'd head there 1st just to be safe since your son really wants to do it. The website states that JTA is for Guests ages 4 to 12 so keep that in mind. You may want to discuss that with your son to avoid disappointment.
During the refurbishment, Tatooine Traders will also remain open which carries some great Star Wars merchandise.
Star Wars fans can build their own lightsabers at
Once Upon A Toy located at Downtown Disney.
If you want to stay updated on the Star Tours refurbishment, keep an eye on the
Disney Parks Blog as they will likely make announcement there regarding the date when it will reopen. If you are on twitter, follow @DisneyParks & @WaltDisneyWorld. If you're on Facebook, keep an eye on the official
Disney Facebook page.
Wishing you many magical memories :-) Allison
