Do you have to leave a credit card for pre-authorization for the Key to the World room charging privileges? Can you leave Travelers Checks or Disney Gift Cards instead?

No a credit card is not required when checking in to a WDW resort.

You may leave whatever form of legal tender best suits your family's budget and/or traveling style.

If you leave a credit card, you'll be given a pre-set spending limit. Once that limit is reached, your card will be charged and you'll be given another spending limit.

If you prefer, you may leave traveler's checks or Disney gift cards to enjoy charging privileges on your room account using your Key to the World card (room key).

WDW is very user-friendly when it comes to checking in and setting up an account!
