Heigh-ho Hector, it's off to Disneyland Resort you go! Your magical adventure is just about to begin, so let's get going.
I have a very dear friend who is a Type I Diabetic and travels to both
Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World frequently. We have enjoyed the theme parks together several times, and I'm happy to share a few tips based on our experiences.
First, all public restrooms in
Disneyland Park and
Disney California Adventure Park have sharps disposal containers, so you won't have a problem locating one while you're on the go. When he was initially diagnosed, my friend's doctor gave him a travel-size sharps disposal container (these can also be obtained at your local pharmacy) that was helpful for theme park visits when he needed to test his levels or use insulin away from a restroom. If you're toting a travel-size container and staying at a
Disneyland Resort Hotel, request a sharps container for your room from the front desk and dispose of materials at the end of each day.
All
quick-service and table-service restaurants have a special binder containing full nutritional information, including carbs and sugar, for all menu items. Upon arrival at a table-service restaurant, ask your server for
nutritional data, and for quick-service dining, approach a Cast Member at the entrance before starting your
Mobile Order.
I also recommend bringing snacks from home your son enjoys to make the time between meals easier. Exploring the theme parks involves a lot of walking and excitement, and even a long-time Type I Diabetic like my friend experiences low blood sugar on every visit. He always has low and high-carb options, like beef jerky and juice boxes, in his theme park bag. He also brings plenty of bottled water and tests his levels more frequently than usual.
I hope this is helpful, Hector, and that you and your son have a fantastic visit to the Happiest Place on Earth. Thanks so much for stopping by
planDisney, and we can't wait to see ya real soon.
