James Asked Note: This answer was provided prior to the change to planDisney and may still contain references to Disney Parks Moms Panel.

I know the Dolphin and Swan are not owned by Disney but to me the rooms seem more luxurious and offer more ammenities. Is this a good option for extended family of 4 adults 4 kids? Can you tell me some positives and negatives? Thanks for your help.

Hi, James!  While I have never stayed at the Swan or Dolphin, my husband was there last fall and really liked it!   The beds were comfortable, there were several pools to choose from, and the location right on the Boardwalk is great.    Although these resorts are not Disney owned, you still get the use of Extra Magic Hours and theme park transportation is included.

The downside of these resorts:   You will NOT have use of Disney's Magical Express to and from the airport.  You will need to rent a car or arrange for other transportation.   You also will be unable to purchase the Disney Dining Plan.   You can still eat at all the Disney restaurants, you just need to pay as you go.  There are a few fees as well (that you will not have at a Disney Resort.)  There is a $10 per day Resort Fee, and if you have a car, there is a $9 per day self-parking fee.

To get a really good overview of the Swan and Dolphin, go to and look up these resorts under ACCOMMODATIONS.

Compare the Swan and Dolphin to some Disney Resorts, and see what will work best for your family.   If you want that "all-out" Disney magic, stick with a Disney Resort.  But if you want a nice room, several pools, and a wonderful location, give Swan or Dolphin a try!   Good luck!
