Hi Kara. Returning to WDW in 03/09. Can you recommend counter svce restaurants in each park that offer vegetables or something other than "brown food" (mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, etc) on the kids menu? Thanks so much for all your help.

    Rebecca:

To me, the dining offerings at Disney make it head and shoulders above other theme parks. Here are a few of my counter-service favorites that offer more than just starches:

Magic Kingdom: Tomorrowland's Cosmic Ray's roasted chicken and green beans. Even my 4-year-old could eat just a plate of their green beans.

Epcot: Sunshine Seasons located in The Land pavilion. There are multiple stations that offer fresh salads, a blue-plate menu and other appealing entrees that aren't the usual hamburger fare. They even have sushi in the refrigerated case.

Animal Kingdom: Our family's favorite is Flame Tree Barbecue. Although the ribs just come with baked beans, last year they also offered a fruit plate and a main-dish salad topped with barbecue chicken. (I tried the Yak and Yeti counter service on a recent visit, but the portion size was rather small and the flavor reminded me of the frozen asian food in the frozen section of the supermarket. In addition, the ratio of rice to the main dish left me wishing we'd just gone back to Flame Tree.)

But I want to end on a positive note.

Disney Studios: The Studio Catering Company has a Kid's Drumstick with your choice of two side items: grapes, applesauce, or carrot sticks. Best of all, you can order milk instead of juice or a soft drink with the kid's meal. On our last visit, my husband and I split the Chicken Caesar Wrap and Greek Salad--yummy and fresh.

If you want to do some extensive research on menu selections, I recommend visiting www.allears.net and looking at their dining menus for the parks.

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
