I’m trying to plan a Disney day trip for 6 for both parks on December 27th. My son’s marching band is playing there. I’m not too knowledgeable with the new reservation system and ride passes or genie passes. I need help planning the trip. Thank you

Hello Sonya and welcome to planDisney. I'm so pleased I can share some advice with you because my family recently accompanied our niece and nephew as they performed with their high school band in Disney California Adventure Park earlier this year!

Disney's Imagination Campus hosts student groups from all over the country to experience enrichment programs in the performing arts, arts and humanities, science and technology, and leadership and innovation. Although your student likely has the logistics of their visit organized by their band director and the Disney Imagination Campus team, you will want to make your own arrangements, including your theme park tickets and park reservations, and any travel accommodations.  Since you already know the date of your son's performance, I recommend you go ahead and purchase your theme park ticket for that day. If you will only visit the theme parks on that day, you can choose a 1-Day Ticket and be sure to select the date of the performance because these tickets are priced by date. If you plan to extend your trip beyond a single day, you may purchase a multi-day ticket for the number of days you wish to visit the theme parks.

You will also need to choose your ticket type. If you are only planning to visit a single theme park, you can opt for the 1 Park per Day ticket. However, if you want the most flexibility to experience both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park on the same day, you can select a Park Hopper Ticket. With a Park Hopper Ticket, you will start your day in one theme park, then after 11:00 AM, you will have access to cross between the two theme parks as much as you'd like throughout your day, subject to capacity.

You will also want to note which theme park in which your son's band is playing on the date of the performance so that you can make your theme park reservations for that park. For example, my niece and nephew performed in Disney California Adventure Park, so we made sure to select this option for our theme park reservation. Securing your theme park reservation is typically done at the end of the ticket purchase process, so don't worry, it's all part of the same set of steps. With these two essential items, you'll be ready to enjoy all the magic!

Sonya, you also asked about Disney Genie+ Service. This is an optional add-on that entitles you to book Lightning Lane entrances to reduce traditional wait times for select attractions around Disneyland Resort. It is a fantastic way to maximize your time because you can book the return windows to ride your favorite attractions at the times that best fit your schedule. Because you'll likely be working around your student's performance itinerary, I highly recommend adding Disney Genie+ Service so you can optimize your day with the most flexibility. One of the best recommendations I can offer is to begin getting familiar with the official Disneyland mobile app, as that will be a vital tool to help you navigate Disney Genie+ Service (and other great features) while you're on your Disneyland Resort vacation!

I know this seems like a lot of information, Sonya, but I hope it is a helpful start. Please don't hesitate to come back to planDisney if I can help clarify anything, or if we can offer other recommendations to make the most of your visit. I'm thrilled for your son to have this incredible experience and for you to make core memories together!

    Wishing you Wondrous Journeys,
