I'm planning our first trip to Disney with my family for 2014. I have two small children ages 4 & 2. I want to know what time of year do you feel is the best? Food plan or no food plan being they are small and dont eat much. Please let me know.

    Hi Danielle,

Planning your first family trip to Walt Disney World is exciting, but there are a lot of things to think about.  You have the luxury of being able to plan a trip at any time of year, without having to worry about the kids missing school. That is wonderful!  My favorite time to go is early October -- just avoid Columbus Day Weekend.  The crowds are light, the weather is warm, and the parks have a autumn feel to them.

I always like the meal plan.  Keep in mind that your 2 year old will be free and won't be on any kind of plan; he/she can share meals with you or with your other child.  This works out great when dining at restaurants that serve meals family style or feature buffets.  The meal plan gives you the opportunity to experience several character meals throughout your vacation without having to experience the hefty price tag that goes with them.  If character dining is something that you definitely want to do, then go with the meal plan.  Another thing I like about the plan is that you don't have to worry about how much meals cost.  You've paid ahead of time, so you can spend your vacation enjoying yourself.

However, if you think you'll be more into grabbing food here and there at counter service locations, then you're probably better off skipping the meal plan and just paying out of pocket.  So while I love the plan, I realize that it's not the best option for every family.

Hope this helps. Have a magical vacation!

Meet the Panelist: Diane, Georgia

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
