Hi, I'm planning a Disney cruise to Alaska with my brother's family. All up, we have 4 children under 3, and I have read that children under 3 are free. We called Disney to book and they are now charging for each child. Have they changed this policy?

    Ahoy, Sharon!

Congratulations on planning your family's cruise aboard the Disney Wonder -- headed north this summer! You are going to be awed and amazed at the ports of call and spoiled and pampered by the cast and crew of that magnificent ship.

Now, as far as the little ones, I can think of a couple of reasons why you were under the impression that they were "free." At the parks and resorts, Disney does not usually count guests under three since you are paying separately for dining, entertainment and accommodations -- and frankly, those under three do not make an impact in those areas. However, since a vacation on Disney Cruise Line is considered luxury travel, there is so much more figured into the cost of a cruise -- including the service and the cost of transporting guests to the various locations -- no matter their age or size. Therefore, every guest's travel has a cost associated with it...just like any mode of transportation.

Also, from time to time, Disney (or third-party providers) will promote offers where children of certain ages sail with parents at no additional cost. I think I remember a similar offer several months ago, but I am not aware of any current offers such as this. So, you see, there wasn't a policy change...there may have been just a special offer.

What you can expect with your cruise fare is unparalleled service, entertainment, dining and accommodations with your Disney Cruise Line experience -- from the oldest to the youngest in your traveling party. You will enjoy time together and separately as you make memories which will last a lifetime. Hopefully, this has helped explain some details for you.

Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
