I'm planning a day trip to magic kingdom next week. It has been a while since I have been. Is it worth getting the genie pass and can you explain a little on how to use it? Thanks!

    Hey there, Kathleen!

Thanks for stopping by planDisney! Some of the best vacations I’ve had at the Most Magical Place on Earth are the last-minute ones. There’s nothing like stepping back into our favorite stories when we didn’t fathom that we would any time soon. Let’s chat about how to make the most out of your day trip.

First, make sure that you make a theme park reservation for the date in which you’d like to visit. If you purchase your 1-day ticket directly from the Walt Disney World Resort website, you will be asked to select the date and theme park, so there are no extra steps needed to reserve your spot.

Magic Kingdom Park is quintessential Disney, and I can’t think of a better place for you to return to the magic! I’m not sure when your last visit was, but there are now Lightning Lanes (similar to the former FastPass queues). It is definitely worth it to unlock access to these queues. As a local who visits often, I don’t use them as much. But when you want to experience as much as possible in one day, this is the way to go, Kathleen.

On the same morning you plan to visit Magic Kingdom Park, you’ll purchase Disney Genie+ as early as midnight. And you can make your first selection for your Genie+’s Lightning Lane options at 7 a.m. Once the theme park opens, rope drop (get in line right away) for another popular attraction that you’d like to ride to maximize your time. Then, check into your first Lightning Lane attraction. That’s two rides down within your first hour or so! As soon as you scan in for each Lightning Lane attraction, make your next Lightning Lane selection. Keep doing this until the end of your day. It will be worth skipping those longer queues, especially if you visit the parks to experience the rides.

AN EXTRA GEM: But wait, there’s more! Now, if you want to experience the thrilling TRON Lightcycle / Run or the fun Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, you may want to purchase an Individual Lightning Lane for it (pricing varies) because it is not a part of the Genie+ options. You can also try to reserve TRON Lightcycle / Run without a purchase by logging in to your My Disney Experience app a little before 7 a.m. and scoring a Virtual Queue spot. You can do this without being in the park; however, your second chance at the free Virtual Queue is at 1 p.m. within the theme park.

Kathleen, please revisit us here at planDisney if you have any other questions. I hope that you have an amazing vacation full of excitement and wonder. Adventure awaits!

    Magic always,
