I’m a little bit confused about the strategy with Genie+. A lot of people say to save them for later in the day, but that confuses me because why wouldn’t you use them throughout the day? I want to make the most of our time and it’s our first time. Thanks!

Welcome back, Emily! Thanks for bringing another great question to planDisney.

Personally, each time I have used Disney Genie+, I made Lightning Lane selections from the moment I stepped into the parks all the way into the late evening hours. That has worked out well for me, and some of these days were very busy days in the parks!

Here are a few guiding principles to keep in mind:

~ You can only use one Lightning Lane per attraction per day, but you can still use the standby queue if you want to experience it again.
~ Though there are three attractions with Individual Lightning Lanes, you can only purchase two Individual Lightning Lanes in a day.
~ You can reserve a Lightning Lane for Disney California Park while physically in Disneyland Park and vice versa.

On a day with Park Hopper tickets last month, starting at Disneyland Park, this is how my daughters and I managed our day:

~ We entered the park at 8:30 a.m. and immediately booked a Lightning Lane for one of the attractions that tends to fill up faster – Space Mountain. We got a return time of 11:00 a.m.. (Other Lightning Lane attractions at Disneyland Park that fill up more quickly are Indiana Jones™ Adventure, Splash Mountain and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.)
~ Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has Individual Lightning Lanes for purchase and this attraction can fill up quickly (I have seen it sell out by noon.) Shortly after booking Space Mountain, we purchased the Individual Lightning Lane for 1:00 p.m.. So, at this point we were holding a Lightning Lane for Space Mountain and Individual Lightning Lane for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
~ We used the standby queue for Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, as those queues were under 30 minutes each that time of morning.
~ At 10:30 a.m., even though we had not redeemed our Space Mountain Lightning Lane yet, we booked an Indiana Jones™ Adventure Lightning Lane for 12:00 p.m., because it had been 120 minutes since we last booked a Lightning Lane. So, as this point were holding two Lightning Lane reservations and one Individual Lightning Lane reservation.
~ At 11:00 a.m. we used our Space Mountain Lightning Lane. We could not yet book another Lightning Lane since we had booked Indiana Jones™ Adventure at 10:30 a.m., so we would need to wait until we redeemed that or 12:30 p.m., whichever came first.
~ By late morning we started looking at Lightning Lanes at Disney California Adventure, as we knew we could park hop after 1:00 p.m.. Genie is smart enough to know you can’t hop until then, so it will show you valid Lightning Lane return times factoring that in.

Hopefully this gives you a sense of how we managed the day. We got an Individual Lightning Lane for WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure at 3:00 p.m. for a return time later that day (we opted to do that instead of Radiator Springs Racers, since I mentioned earlier you can only purchase a total of two Individual Lightning Lanes in a day across the two parks.) We continued to book Lightning Lanes in both parks throughout the day, including booking Matterhorn Bobsleds at 7:30 p.m. for a 9:00 p.m. return time. We counted that we used 12 Lightning Lanes and 2 Individual Lightning Lanes that day!

Also, you can cancel Lightning Lanes. Example: if you book one a few hours out and want to cancel and book something else, you can. You can still rebook that Lightning Lane later that day, it doesn't count as used.

Pack a portable charger, your phone will thank you for it. Oh, and use mobile order for snacks while waiting in queues!

I hope this helps, Emily. The magic awaits!
