I'm interested in going to Trader Sam's for a few hours. I am not staying at the Polynesian. If I rent a car and drive to the Polynesian, how can I get through the gate without a reservation?

Wow! Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort? I can certainly relate to wanting to experience this fun tropical lounge location with your family. By the way, many of my Walt Disney World Resort visits include using a rental car because of its convenience.

You are free to visit the resort to grab a bite to eat, enjoy the sights of the resort or do a little shopping without a resort reservation. When you arrive, just let the friendly cast member know what you plan to do while you are there, and they will let you know how to proceed. Since you plan to stay a few hours, I recommend parking at the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) and utilizing the Monorail Transportation; that way, you can take all the time you need at the resort.
