I'm a DVC member with home resort of VGC. To use our points, we just booked a trip to WDW for 9 of us staying at OKW middle of March. Pretty versed in DL, but don't really know much about WDW. What's important to know about WDW vs DL?

    Welcome Home, Sue!

How exciting that you’ll be visiting the Walt Disney World Resort! While we are usually a Walt Disney World family, I have enjoyed several visits to Disneyland. I love the smaller atmosphere and knowing that it is the park where I can walk in Walt's footsteps.

When I describe Disneyland to friends more familiar with Walt Disney World, I usually say, “It’s similar enough to make you think you know where you are, but different enough that you really might need that map!” First, it’s important to recognize that the Walt Disney World Resort is much larger than the Disneyland Resort. You should plan for more travel time than you may be used to. I recommend leaving yourself an hour to travel between your resort and a theme park, or equally long if you will be park hopping. This is very different than walking across the plaza at Disneyland, and you don't want to feel stressed from running late.

Dining reservations also flow a bit differently. In my experience at Disneyland, it was fairly easy to wait until just before my trip to secure a dining reservation, or even possible to get a table service reservation on the day of my visit. At Walt Disney World, reservations for popular locations and times can fill more quickly. If you will be looking for Advance Dining Reservations, I would book them as soon as possible, which is currently 60 days prior to your visit.

When it comes to dining, always be sure to ask if there are any discounts for Disney Vacation Club Members. Many table service dining locations at both resorts offer a discount to Members. However, while many quick service locations offer a discount at Disneyland, most quick-service at Walt Disney World do not. For a complete list, be sure to visit the Member Benefits page on the Disney Vacation Club website.

There are also some differences between Disneyland’s MaxPass and the FastPass+ system at Walt Disney World. Currently, FastPass+ is not available, so you won't need to worry about managing that.

Since you will be staying at Disney’s Old Key West Resort, I highly recommend dinner at Olivia’s Cafe. This is a laid back dining location with outstanding food and excellent service, and I love their Buttermilk Chicken. Take a piece of their famous Key Lime Pie back to your villa for a treat later! If you are not booked in the “Hospitality House” booking category at the resort, I recommend requesting a room in the Peninsular Road area. We have found the buildings in this area to still be an easy and reasonable walk to the Hospitality House for a quick bite to eat or trip to the pool.

Please let me know what additional questions you have as your visit approaches, we are here to help!

    Wishing you Membership Magic!
