Hi there Amanda, and welcome to
planDisney!
You're in for an incredible vacation this May; it's one of my favorite months to visit, and this year, what you're wearing on your face is just as important as your super suit. As Edna Mode would say, you'll look fabulous, dahling!
My family and I visited both
Walt Disney World and our local theme parks last summer when the temperatures were at their highest. As teachers, my husband and I wear masks from the moment we walk into our classrooms until the last bell, and we do a fair amount of talking, which also has an impact on mask comfort. I'm happy to share some tried and true mask-wearing tips that we've learned throughout the past year.
One thing I've noticed, is that everyone has developed very specific mask preferences. If you haven't been out and about much in the past year and worn a mask for several hours at a time, I recommend practicing before your vacation. It wasn't until I wore a mask in a theme park and to work that I realized what worked best for me. For example, a lot of people prefer disposable, surgical-style masks, but those tend to be too large for my face and just don't work for me.
The masks sold by
shopDisney and throughout the Disney Parks and resorts are quite comfortable and fit everyone in my family well. They are the absolute favorite mask for my young Mouseketeers; the medium fits my 7-year-old and the small fits my 4-year-old perfectly. The soft straps are easy on their ears and the material is durable. My kiddos also have masks from Old Navy, but the adjustable earpieces can get a little painful after a few hours of wear. Mom tip: bring several masks per person, per day, as changing things up every so often helps.
Also available on
shopDisney, the Spirit Jersey® branded face masks are fantastic. They are lightweight, comfortable, and, most importantly for us loquacious travelers, the material doesn't get sucked into your mouth when talking. When I'm in Walt Disney World, I want to eat Mickey Ice Cream Bars, not my mask! These are more generously sized than other Disney masks, and a Youth Medium fits adult me.
Finally, other companies that sell masks ideal for Olaf-approved climates are Uniqlo (the original airism mask is my favorite) and Athleta. If a visit to
Disney Springs is on your itinerary, you can pick up a pack of Uniqlo masks there. No matter which mask you choose, I also recommend purchasing some adhesive metal nose strips (I get mine on Amazon) to avoid fogging up your sunglasses.
I hope this helps, Amanda. Once face coverings became part of our world, I embarked on a search for the best one! Currently, the masks I wear most often are the ones made by Spirit Jersey® and Uniqlo, but I keep all aforementioned masks in my rotation. Best of luck finding something that works for you, and have a magical vacation!
