I’m cruising on the Disney Dream soon. Everyone in our party has Apple Watches. Do I still need magic bands or will the watch do everything the magic band can do?

Well ahoy there Kimberly, welcome back to planDisney!

When it comes to wearables at Disney Destinations, I enjoy being able to bring around my very own piece of tech right on my wrist (especially when I've got my hands full) and from the sounds of it, you must be familiar with Disney MagicMobile service that currently allows you to utilize your Apple Watch at the theme parks! Now it's important to remember that even at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort there are a number of functions and experiences that can only be experienced with a MagicBand+, which will also work on Disney Cruise Line ships. (It's important to note that this is only on a select few at the current time, with an aim to expand across the fleet!)

I recently returned from my cruise on the Disney Wish where I had the opportunity to try out the DisneyBand+ (the name for the same wearable MagicBand+ technology on the ships and internationally) and test each of the various tap points in different locations and venues on board, including the Oceaneer's Club with its Star Wars Cargo Bay and Walt Disney Imagineering Lab spaces. Now I was told by a shoreside Cast Member that "regrettably, an Apple Watch will not work on board in place of the DisneyBand+" and can confirm that they currently did not work for us in practice either; instead we had to use the new DisneyBand+ or our existing MagicBand+. As someone who was part of the initial testing and implementation of this technology on board a decade ago, I think it's always worth trying to see whether any new changes or updates have happened by the time of your voyage!

On the bright side, Disney Cruise Line recently announced that DisneyBand+ will be available on board the Disney Dream as of yesterday - November 20, 2023 so you can look forward to being able to have some of your own! I will say that I did observe a number of fellow seafarers having perhaps a bit of difficulty pairing their shiny new band, so I recommend ensuring that it's fully charged first and inquiring directly at the Guest Services Desk located on Deck 3, Midship on board for any additional assistance. Hope this helps, Kimberly!

May your next Disney adventure be everything you Dream it will be!
