I'm confused by the info on the DW website. Do the "extra Disney hours" on special days just apply to if your staying at a DW resort? or can I participate in coming early or staying late on the days they offer it if I'm staying w/friends and family?

Extra Magic Hours (EMH) are for WDW resort guests staying on property in one of the resorts. It's one of the on-site perks.

Morning EMH allows resorts guests in to the parks 1 hour prior to regular park opening time. When arriving, you must show your resort ID to enter.

Evening EMH allows resort guests to remain within the park for 3 extra hours. You will need to get a wristband at one of the distribution areas within the EMH park in order to stay.

If you are staying off-site, I would plan your schedule to avoid the EMH park. For example, if the Magic Kingdom has EMH, go to a different park that day. Avoid the crowds, don't join them!
