Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel, Jeanette! Thanks for sending me your question.
I, too, still have the first
MagicBand I purchased back in 2015! Although these first-generation MagicBands should still work for short-range uses (for admission via the tapstiles at the front of the
Walt Disney World Resort Theme Parks and for
FastPass+ redemption), they probably won’t work for long-range uses such as
PhotoPass photos and videos for attractions like
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and the
Haunted Mansion at
Magic Kingdom Park or
Slinky Dog Dash at
Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Although the first generation of MagicBands are a thinner width than the current versions, they are a little bulkier. One of the major advantages of purchasing a new MagicBand2 is that its center icon is removable and interchangeable. This means you can keep the band you love and just swap out the center piece if its battery dies. It also means you can use something like a
MagicKeepers Lanyard Medal clipped to your bag or belt loop if you’d prefer not to wear it on your wrist.
Check out the current selection on
shopDisney.com as well as at any of the
Walt Disney World Resort shops. And if you’re a Guest at an official
Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you’ll receive a brand new MagicBand at no additional charge!
Enjoy your next visit to The Most Magical Place on Earth, Jeanette. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
