My husband and I are planning on visiting WDW in February 2010. I can't decide if we should bring our RV or stay at Pop Century (We haven't stayed at either one). We are trying to be budget friendly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

    Tiffany:

I love getting questions from fellow campers!

Our family owns an RV and we look forward to every trip to Fort Wilderness at Disney World!  I have to tell you that I'm a little biased when it comes to comparing a Value or Moderate resort to the fort....

A few things to think about:
    • Gas mileage: of course the RV is going to use more than your car.  But we justify the extra gas cost on the ease of travel, and make up for it in our budget on food.  We typically eat breakfast and dinner in the RV and enjoy lunches in the parks.  Food costs will mark the biggest difference between staying at the campground vs. a resort.
    • Campsites have varying prices--and some can cost the same as a room at Pop Century if you don't know what you're asking for.  Although we've never stayed on one of the larger premium loops (new grills, cable, bigger pads), we've always enjoyed either a full hookup loop or premium (has cable) site.
    • Another money saver: simply enjoying the fort vs. a park.  Your savings can add up quickly when you don't have to purchase tickets to the parks.  Fort Wilderness provides days of activities: its newly-renovated pool with a slide, Chip 'n' Dale's campfire sing-a-long (it's free!), Magic Kingdom fireworks from the beach and pier, The Settlement and Meadows trading posts, the stables, trails for our bikes...we've gone for several trips and not even visited the theme parks!
If you have the time, visit www.disboards.com.  It has a Disney camping thread there with pictures of the campsites and even more reasons to visit the fort!  If you have any more Disney camping questions, just visit me via my bio page at www.disneyworldmoms.com!  Happy to help!

Meet the Panelist: Whitney, Mississippi

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
