My husband & I plan on purchasing a DVC in the near future. I have a question about what home resort we should pick. Should we go with more points at a less expensive resort or less points at the resort we like the most?

    Hello, Christina!

Great question! I can't tell you what would be best for your own situation; I can shed some light on what my husband and I chose, and the rationale behind it. I can also tell you the benefit of the choices you've mentioned.

If you have certain, specific vacations in mind, especially those that might involve a particular resort during an exceptionally crowded season, then the Home Resort Booking Advantage is something for you to consider. We specifically purchased a membership at Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort so that we would have that 11-month booking advantage for a Theme Park View Villa whenever we wanted one. (We booked a two-bedroom that year over the Fourth of July, just so that we'd have a spectacular view of that incredible firework display from our own villa.)  If you'd like to book during one of the peak seasons at a specific resort, that 11-month window can really be helpful.

However, if you are more flexible about where you stay, and would rather have more options for an extended stay or for having more room, then there is wisdom in gaining the most membership points for your money.  We added onto our DVC Membership at another resort that would gain us that same 11-month window for a property (which we love) but has a lower point allotment for a typical week's stay.  This, however, is really only an issue if you wait to book your vacation, rather than booking as soon as you are able to do so.  I've booked many reservations at the 7-month window and had no trouble getting exactly the type of villa in the resort I wanted.  Of course, this is never guaranteed.

I hope this helps inform your decision regarding your resort of choice.  If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to send them my way!  I love to help, and can't wait to be one of the first to say to you "Welcome Home!"
