Hi, my husband is in the Military and while we are stationed close to Florida we would like to take our son who will be 4 at the time of travel to Disney. How far in advance do we need to book the vacation? Planning to travel in March 2014.

    Hi Melissa!

This is a great question.  You are proposing to go during a time of the year when the crowds are typically "medium".  Thus you should be able to get a resort at Walt Disney World or you could stay in the Shades of Green, an Armed Forces Recreational Center located in the heart of Walt Disney World.  Once you have the hotel room, you could in theory wait for everything else.

However, many of the most popular Table Service restaurants fill up quickly.  Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance.  Thus I advise guests to have the majority of their planning done by 7 months in advance so that they can be ready to make reservations at the most popular restaurants at 180 days out.

That said, it is also possible to do a last minute Disney vacation and I have done it myself many times.  The real question is how important are the most popular restaurants, especially the Disney Character Dining Experiences, to you?  The more important it is to get in to the most popular Table Service restaurants, and especially at specific times, the more important it will be to plan and book early.

I hope this helps!  Please write back with more questions!
