Hey there! I was wondering if I could bring my kalimba on board. I know that big instruments like druns and guitars are most likely not allowed, but a kalimba is a small handheld instrument and is very quiet. Thank you for your time.

Hi there, Lillian! Welcome aboard, planDisney!

I can see that you’re in the fun packing phase of your Disney cruise planning! This is one of my favorite parts about sailing on a Disney cruise. I love watching that magical countdown shrink as I plan all my fun Disney outfits and items to bring with me!

Part of that planning process is figuring out which items we can and can’t bring with us on board. While I would love to bring all my favorite things from home, I have to be mindful of what Disney Cruise Line allows.

One of those prohibited items is musical instruments, which you can find in the "Household and General Items" section of the List of Prohibited Items. Your kalimba falls under this category, so unfortunately, you won’t be able to bring it with you aboard your Disney cruise. But this does not mean that you won’t be able to hear live musical instruments, as there is plenty of musical fun on board!

You can find live music in the Atrium and/or Grand Hall of your Disney cruise ship every single night around dinner time. This is one of my favorite things about the evenings aboard Disney Cruise Line. With a live singer and band right in the center of it all, it feels like the entire ship magically transformed into a hub filled with evening entertainment! In fact, some of my family’s best memories are before or after dinner when we would all dance along to these songs together. I love remembering my husband twirling my daughters around with a live singer and music playing on!

You can also find live music in the lounges, adult-only bars, and sometimes even during the Broadway-style shows inside the Walt Disney Theater. Besides live instruments, there are also plenty of musical activities taking place, such as karaoke sessions (one of my favorite activities!), musical trivia, such as identifying Disney soundtracks, and many more. To find where all of these musical happenings are taking place, all you need to do is take a look at the “Daily Plans” section of the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Lastly, while we're on the subject of packing, I highly recommend browsing this packing list for your Disney cruise. I always find that it really helps me not to forget anything important that I might want to bring with me.

Lillian, I hope I was able to provide you with some fun musical alternatives. I wish you the most melodious memories on board! Please sail back to planDisney if you have any more questions.
