Hey Allison, my family is really excited about our upcoming trip to Disney!!! We are staying at the Wilderness Lodge. Someone said we should ask about being Flag Family for the day...do you know anything about that? Thanks!

    Hi Kyla,

I LOVE the Wilderness Lodge! Its a beautiful resort! Each day, a family (this can be a family, couples, solo guests, friends, etc.) accompanies a Ranger to the roof of the main building of the Wilderness Lodge to help raise the flags. To be chosen you must be a WL Resort Guest and can only sign up for the dates of your stay there. Its first come, first sign up. You can not sign up prior to your stay - you must do it in person. If they have an opening during one of the mornings of your visit, you can sign up.  I suggest that you inquire about it when you check in because the earlier you try the more days (chances) you'll have to try to sign up.

Those chosen as Flag Family for that day meet a Ranger in the lobby of the main building. The Ranger will accompany you to the roof of the building. Once there, you assist in raising the five flags that fly over the WL - the American Flag, the Florida State Flag, the Disney World Flag & two WL flags. You are invited to say the "Pledge of Allegiance" with the Ranger.  You are welcome to take pictures so be sure to take your camera and/or video camera with you. I've never been lucky enough to stay when they have an opening but I hear the view is amazing.

When I was there in May, the Flag Family was also treated to a complimentary breakfast on the concierge level. You'll also receive a certificate to commemorate the occasion.  I can't think of a better way to start the day.

Oh - one other thing that I think is cool about the WL is that they have a geyser just beyond the main pool that erupts sending water more than 100 feet in the air.  The geyser erupts every hour on the hour between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. seven days a week.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you and your family get lucky and get to sign up for Flag Family one of the days during your stay. Wishing you many magical memories :-) Allison
