Hello! We’re hoping to plan a trip to Disney World early Jan 2023 ( 2nd-8th) Just wondering about how the visit may be for us non runners coming during marathon week in terms of crowd levels, resort availability, park hours etc. Thank you :)

    Hi Chelsea!

Here at planDisney we love how you are planning ahead and doing your Disney homework!

While the dates for the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon have not been announced, your prediction that the race will be during the time of your visit seems a good assumption. This event historically brings in thousands of runners, but early January is not a popular time otherwise. In fact, speculation is that Disney picked this time back in the 1990s to hold a major race to bring in Guests during a low season.

Do snag your Walt Disney World Resort reservations early, so you can pick your preferred hotel. Room only reservations may be made 499 days in advance, but not online; call (407) 939-1936 to speak to a Cast Member. When vacation packages are released for 2023, you may convert your room booking into a package if you wish. Room only reservations may be cancelled five days in advance; vacation packages may be cancelled 30 days in advance.

The theme parks will open at traditional times. The races begin extremely early, so participants are mostly finished by park openings. In Epcot, you may encounter some runners during the half and full marathon days in the morning. When I muddled through the full a few years ago, guests did have to wait a few minutes to cross some Epcot walkways while we plodded our way to the finish line.

My best advice to non-runners during the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is easy to follow- stay off the road at 4:00 am. Traffic is crazy with busses and cars driving to the starting line.

Wishing you a wonderful visit to see Mickey!
