Hello, This is my first time coming to the park with a child. He will be 6 by the time we go and is on the shorter side. I was wondering how fast pass selection worked with a child and/or child swap.

Hi, Tabatha!  Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel.

I am so excited to hEAR that you have a visit to the Walt Disney World Resort planned for your little Mouseketeer!  There is nothing quite like experiencing that Disney magic through a child's eyes.  My kiddos have also always been on the shorter side, so on their first several trips to the Walt Disney World Resort, there were a few attractions that they were unable to experience.  However, they never really minded since there is just so much to see and do for guests of any age and size!  If you wish to see exactly which attractions your little guy will be able to experience, simply go to the attractions page on the Walt Disney World website and filter by height.

For those attractions that your child is not quite ready for, the Walt Disney World Resort offers the Rider Switch Service.  If your little guy does not meet the height requirement for an attraction or simply does not wish to ride, you may ask a Cast Member at the attraction entrance to issue you a Rider Switch entitlement.  One adult can then wait with the non-rider(s) while the others in the party experience the attraction.  Once they return, the waiting adult may skip the standby queue and board the ride with up to two other guests from your party.

If you wish to use FastPass+ along with the Rider Switch Service, thus eliminating the need for anyone to wait in the standby queue, you may certainly do so.  Please keep in mind that everyone wishing to ride should have a valid FastPass+ for that attraction.  Obviously you do not need to book a FastPass+ for a child who does not meet the height requirement for that attraction.  However, if you wish to make a different FastPass+ selection for your little guy, please be aware that any other guests accompanying him on that attraction must also have a FastPass+.

In my opinion, it is often easiest to use your FastPass+ selections for attractions that your entire travel party wishes to experience together.  Don't forget that once you have used the three FastPass+ selections that you reserved in advance, you will be able to continue to select another FastPass+, one-at-a-time, based on availability.  These additional selections can be made using your My Disney Experience mobile app or at any of the FastPass+ kiosks conveniently located throughout the theme parks.
