I have heard it is a long commute from the Wilderness Lodge to Epcot, up to an hour at busy times. Would it be faster to take the boat from the WL to the MK then the monorail to Epcot, or should i plan to rent a car for my March 2010 Disney Vacation

On an average day the bus from Wilderness Lodge to EPCOT should take about 20-25 minutes.  Of course if you just miss one bus then it can be another 15-20 minute wait for the next one.  If there are large crowds during the time you are there then most likely all transportation will be quite crowded.  Heading to the Magic Kingdom is an option but by the time you wait for the boat, transfer to the monorail, transfer again at the Ticket and Transportation Center for the EPCOT monorail and arrive at EPCOT, this will probably take you even longer!  Even during crowded times we opted not to rent a car but it is another option which allows you to get to the parks and other resorts.  I find that the occasional use of a cab is less expensive then renting a car during our stays.  Taxis will drop you off to the park entrances much closer then if you have to park and then use the shuttles.
