We are heading down there in Feb. 2011 with our 7 yr old girl. If we rented bikes can we get to the parks faster than the bus? Is it safe riding? And are there grocery stores close enough to ride a bike? We will probably be staying at POR.

    Kathy:

If it helps with the geography, Disney World is roughly the same size as the city of San Francisco!  Honestly, riding a bike to and from the parks is not doable, nor do I recommend it, as there are no bike paths, just roads that in some places have speed limits over 55 MPH.  Large grocery store chains are located off property, at most a 10-minute drive, but again, not accessible by bike.

There are several beefed-up gift shops with freezer and perishable sections located in the gift shops of the Vacation Club resorts. The Vacation Club resort properties tend to have a lot more in stock than you'll find at Port Orleans.  Nearby Saratoga Springs Resort is a DVC property, and you can access it from POR by taking the boat from POR to Downtown Disney and transferring over to the SS ferry. Although I've not been to it, I would imagine it would be similar to Beach Club's, Boardwalk's, and The Meadows Trading Post at Fort Wilderness: essentially a smaller version of what you'd find at a 7-11 mini-mart.

Your best bet for groceries, though, is to take a taxi off property.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
