We are headed to WDW for the first time in 30 years! We are spending 5 days in the parks, but would like to explore the Orlando area on a day off. What transportation would you recommend, rental car or taxi?

Hi Patricia!  Although you can fill your days completely by staying on Disney property I can understand your wish to explore this great Florida city.  Your most economical way is through a rental car. There are many great companies that offer super deals and you can get the best by renting at the airport when you arrive. If you only want a car for a short time during your visit you can also rent a care conveniently at the Disney Car Care Center located next to the Magic Kingdom. They will pick you up at your resort and drop you back off making this very easy. Other rental car locations are at the Swan and Dolphin and in the Downtown Disney hotel area.

Taxis can be expensive. The rate from the airport is about $50-$60 dollars to a Disney resort. You can also use the Orlando bus system called Lynx which you can pick up in Downtown Disney. This would be the most economical way but you will need to research the routes so you would not be stressed about getting from point A to point B. Hope this helps and let me know what else I can assist you with.
