Hi, Happy New Year! My fiancé and I are planning on taking a cruise but this would be our first ever so we have no idea about the attire. Ive looked at the FAQs but I'm not sure what would considered overdressed.

    Ahoy, Taylor!

Happy New Year! I'm so excited to hear you'll be sailing for the very first time with Captain Mickey on a Disney Cruise Line vacation. Our very first cruise was with Disney, and we fell in love with everything about it. You'll be treated like a VIP from the moment you step onboard and hear the crew members announce your name - you'll feel like a celebrity on the red carpet!

As a notorious "over-packer", I'm thankful that Disney Cruise Line makes it easy for me by having "Cruise Casual" nights for most evenings. "Cruise Casual" means no swimwear or tank tops, and I recommend no casual shorts. Dressy shorts, capris, slacks and sundresses are the norm when visiting the Main Dining Venues on the ship! I usually pack outfits that I would wear out to dinner with friends.

On most itineraries, there are optional dress-up nights where you'll want to dress a little more fancy. On our most recent 7-night cruise, we had a Semi-Formal night as well as a Formal night. On these evenings, you'll see women in everything from Sunday dresses to ball gowns, and men wearing casual suits to tuxedos. No matter how "dressy" you choose to go, you'll have others in the same boat (see what I did there?) You'll also find a stricter dress code if you dine in any of the adult-exclusive venues. (If you're planning on dining at Remy, men need to have button-front collared shirts and a jacket.) Most cruises also have theme nights, such as Pirate Night, where you can get dressed up for fun photo ops and swashbuckling fun! Don't worry if you don't own pirate attire, there's lots of accessories and pirate gear available in the onboard shops.

I hope this helps with your planning, shopping and packing! Please come back and visit us here at the Disney Parks Moms Panel if you have more questions before your vacation - we're happy to help. -Diane W.
