How do I handle my husband’s disability in regard to not being able to stand in long wait times in lines?

Hi, Tonia, and welcome back to planDisney! Wow! Your trip is just a few weeks away, and I bet you're getting so excited! I know I would be! Let's take a look at some accessibility options for your husband.

I understand how important it is to balance doing and experiencing as much as possible on a park day with actually enjoying it by not over-doing it. I frequently travel with my elderly parents, who struggle with standing in long lines due to mobility limitations. I have found that accommodations for Guests with disabilities are dependent upon the need. Let's take a closer look.

Disney offers Disability Access Service (DAS) for Guests who aren't able to stand in lines due to a developmental disability. If this applies to you, I encourage you go through the process of preregistration, which is required to use the service.

If your husband isn't able to stand in lines due to mobility reasons, Wheelchair Rentals and Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECVs) Rentals are available at each Disney Theme Park. Availability is limited, so your best chance at securing a mobility device is to arrive early. Many Guests also rent through third-party companies, some of which will deliver to your hotel.

In my parents' case, they choose not to use a mobility device, so we've gotten a bit creative over the years to help them maximize their fun while minimizing their steps. We use Lightning Lane Passes to help us ride as many attractions as possible with minimal wait times. We also tend to take a break right before we enter an attraction line that's on the longer side. We'll grab a cold beverage and a snack, find some shade and take in the park ambiance for a bit. Another strategy we like to use is touring the parks area-by-area instead of zig-zagging back and forth. Finally, we enjoy Disney After Hours events to get us out of the hot sun and into the low attraction wait times. Plus, because these events tend to have lower crowds than a normal park day, navigating the parks is easier, too. We like to spend the day relaxing at our Disney Resorts Collection Hotel before heading out for the event.

Tonia, I hope you've found these tips helpful and that you and your husband have a great vacation. If you have any other questions, please send them our way here at planDisney. We'd love to help.

    Have a magical trip!
