We want to go to Disneyland for our daughters first birthday in December. Should we buy our passes now and reserve her birthday or buy day passes and then upgrade them to annual passes? We don’t want our pass benefits to start before our first visit.

Hi there, Brittany. Welcome to planDisney. Thanks for stopping by with your question for us.

How exciting that you’ll be celebrating your daughter’s first birthday at the Happiest Place on Earth. What a magical place to commemorate this milestone! I’m also delighted to see you’re interested in becoming Magic Key Passholders. With the new Magic Key pass, you’ll be able to take more trips and create new memories as a family at the Disneyland Resort.  Don’t forget, you’ll also be able to take advantage of discounts at select merchandise and dining locations as well!

Your Magic Key is activated upon its first use, Brittany. If you purchase a Dream Key, which includes standard theme park parking, it is activated when you use the parking benefit for the first time, or when you use the pass to enter the theme park for the first time. If you purchase any other Magic Key, it is activated the first time you use the pass to enter the theme park. Once activated, it will expire one year after its first use. If you don’t activate the Magic Key, it will expire one year from the purchase date.

Whether you purchase day passes versus Magic Key passes will depend on what is currently available. I recommend checking the Magic Key Access Calendars (depending on which of the four Magic Key Passes you plan to purchase) and the Theme Park Reservation Availability calendar for regular tickets. If the date you wish to purchase is available only for day passes (and sold out for Magic Key Passes), then it is best to make your theme park reservations with the day pass and upgrading to a Magic Key Pass once you’ve arrived at the Disneyland Resort.

I hope this information is helpful for you. As you continue to plan many more trips to the Happiest Place on Earth, please write us again if you have additional questions. We’re all EARS!

Sending warm wishes to your daughter. Happy Birthday!

    See ya real soon,

Meet the Panelist: Kiki, California

Greetings from Northern California! I have been fascinated by the magic of Disney since I was a little girl; now that I am a mother of two, I love watching my children experience Disney Parks through their own eyes. I am also surrounded by fellow Disney-loving nurse friends whom I enjoy quick adults-only Disneyland Resort escapes with. Whether you are planning your once-in-a-lifetime family trip or a short adults-only getaway to the Happiest Place on Earth, I am here to help!
