A girlfriend and I have signed up for the Tinkerbell Half-Marathon at Disneyland in January 2012. We would love to take our families on a Disney Cruise leaving the same day out of LA. Will there be enough time to do the race then get aboard the ship?

    Hi, Shannon!

It depends on how fast you are, Tink!  Chances are, you're faster than I am -- so, you should have plenty of time to run then sail to the Mexican Riviera on the Disney Wonder!

I ran the Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World back in February and ran about a 12-minute pace finishing it around 2.5 hours. The official race starting time for the Tinkerbell Half Marathon is at 5:45 a.m., but you'll be corralled according to your qualifying time. I was in "C" (middle of the pack) -- to give you an idea.  I actually didn't start until 15-20 minutes after the fastest runners, but I think I could've finished, showered and traveled to a Disney cruise leaving from this coast in time.

For most Disney cruises, guests are required to board prior to 4 p.m. It's a good idea to have a plan with your family for that day including getting a shower and packing and then securing transportation to the port on race/embarkation day. You'll need about 30 minutes to an hour at the port for luggage handling, security, checking in and boarding.

As a runner, remember to keep hydrating yourself throughout the day after your race -- it's easy to forget when you're traveling and keeping track of your family. Plus, try not to stop moving...especially when you're on the ship.  The tendency may be to plant yourself on a lounge chair by the pool, but make sure you shake it at the Sail Away Celebration and take the stairs!

I'm sailing this itinerary in November, and I'll have more tips posted here and at DisneyCruise.com in case you have more questions.  Let me know if I can answer anything specifically in the meantime.  Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation.

    Bon voyage,

    Andi
