Is the genie+ worth to get and how does it work

    Hi there, Jolene!

Welcome to planDisney and thanks for stopping by with your question! It sounds like you're planning quite far ahead of your trip, which is never a bad thing! I'd be happy to explain to you how Genie+ works. This information will be current as of this writing, but Disney is always refining their policies to best fit guest needs, so they are subject to change.

Genie+ is an option that you may add to your ticket either when purchasing them on the Disneyland website or as a one day purchase after you've scanned your ticket to enter the Park. If you are familiar with their old FastPass system, it is an evolution of this protocol that will allow you to bypass the standby queues on select attractions. The price of Genie+ varies day by day, and you'll have to be the judge of whether it's worth it for you or not. Currently, Disneyland Park has 11 attractions with Lightning Lane entrances and Disney California Adventure has 8. For guests who only have a limited amount of time to spend in the Parks and want to experience as much as possible, I think Genie+ is an incredible value and will most definitely save you a ton of time from waiting in standby queues! In addition, all Disney PhotoPass downloads are included when you have Genie+, so that adds some more value to its price!

The way it works is through the Disneyland Mobile App, which you should definitely download prior to your visit. Once you have purchased Genie+, you may book a Lightning Lane reservation as soon as you enter the Park. Lightning Lane return times are assigned based on the popularity of the attraction, so you will see earlier times towards the beginning of the day. You are able to go back into the App to modify your Lightning Lane return time if needed. To maximize my time, I like to immediately book a Lightning Lane for one attraction, then get into a short standby queue for another. You are allowed to book another Lightning Lane when:

    1. You've redeemed the Lightning Lane you're currently holding at its attraction, or...
    2. Two hours have passed since you've booked your last Lightning Lane.

So one tip I like is to set a two-hour phone timer so you're reminded when you're able to book another Lightning Lane. In this way, you will often have several Lightning Lanes "stacked up" towards the latter portion of the day and you'll be able to experience many of the more popular attractions without much of a wait. But remember that you can use Genie+ for each attraction once per day. You are more than welcome to use the standby queue multiple times, but you may redeem a Lightning Lane for each attraction only once per day. And if you have a Park Hopper Ticket, you will be able to book Lightning Lanes at the other Park after 11 a.m.

Phew! I hope that answers your question about Genie+ and how it works! If you need more clarification or just have more questions for us, please feel free to visit again anytime! You're always welcome at planDisney! Until next time!

Wishing You a Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow!

Meet the Panelist: Al, California

Ahoy there from the heart of Steinbeck Country in central California! I've been visiting the Disneyland Resort since childhood and fell in love with the sense of absolute immersion that the Imagineers have achieved. My favorite attraction is Pirates of the Caribbean because where else can you go from a California day to an evening boat ride in the bayou with "salty old pirates"? I'm a veterinarian and an all-around Disney geek and enthusiast. I'd love to help you plan your next Disneyland trip! Learn More About Al
