    is Genie+ worth it?

    Hello Kevin,

Sounds like you are in the midst of trying to create the most magical vacation experience possible. We've all been there. It's exciting, but it's a challenge to make all of the "right" choices.

The great thing about Disney Genie+ is that you can wait until you are in the parks to determine if it's a good option for you. Bonus: you can purchase it on a day by day basis, so you may decide you want it on the day you are heading to Magic Kingdom, but not on the day you head to Animal Kingdom.

If you were heading to Walt Disney World at a time when the parks typically experience heavier than normal crowds, like in the middle of Summer, I would suggest considering purchasing it in advance for your entire trip. However, since it looks like your vacation is coming up in a few days, you may want to wait and gauge the crowds in each park. If you're in a park where the standby lines seem really long, Genie+ will help you ride the most attractions in least amount of time.

Keep in mind, you can only use the Lightning Lane for each attraction once. So, if you are a big fan of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, you'll be able to make one Lightning Lane reservation. After that, if you want to ride it again, you'll need to wait in the regular standby line.

If you purchase it before park opening for a specific day, you can select your first attraction at 7:00 a.m., so that is one advantage of purchasing it even a day before you head to the park.

There are also some Individual Lightning Lane attractions where you pay per ride. They aren't included with regular Disney Genie+, but the good news is you don't have to purchase Genie+ to make reservations for these attractions. For example, in Animal Kingdom, the standby line for Avatar Flight of Passage is typically really long. If that's on your "must do" list, you can purchase that separately. The price fluctuates depending on the attraction, and with a whole family paying to ride, it can add up. So, you might decide to treat yourself to an Individual Lightning Lane and forego Genie+ for that park.

So, is it worth it? When I'm determining that for my own family, the answer is different based on which parks I'll be going to. I love the fact that you don't have to be locked into purchasing it for your entire stay. In the middle of the week, you may not need it, but if crowds start to increase closer to the weekend, you can add it on. It's customizable, based on your own style of touring the parks.

Regardless of whether you purchase Genie+, the free version of Disney Genie is a great planning tool that will help you optimize your Disney park experience, alerting you to wait times and providing tips and suggestions for your itinerary throughout your day.

Hope this helps. Have a magical vacation!

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
