My friends live in Florida. They don't want to go to the park, but they do want to visit us for a couple of hours at the resort hotel. Is this allowed?

Of course, anyone can visit you at the resorts if you are registered.   If similar to the experience I had when visiting someone recently, I was asked by the security guard for the last name of the guest and that was it.    You can also call your resort and confirm if any other arrangements are necessary.   One other alternative is to meet them offsite - I often meet friends and family at Downtown Disney - great restaurants and plenty to do.
