Our flight arrival is at 5:20pm, 2/15/10. We are not going to a park that evening should we grab dinner at the POR where we are staying or take a bus to DD? We have no reservations for that night, should we make them and if yes, what time?Prefer sit down.

You have a couple of options here!
One is Boatwright's Dining Hall which is a Southern, shipyard themed casual restaurant at Port Orleans Riverside Resort.  This is just what my family did when we came in late to the Resort in Feb of 2008. It was convenient & not so busy that we needed a reservation.

Also, your Resort is right there on the Sassagoula River & your family can hop on one of the ferryboats for a lovely ride to Downtown Disney! DD has a large list of dining options with some being so popular that reservations are definitely recommended, such as the Rainforest Cafe. Here is a link with the restaurants listed: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/destinations/downtown-disney/
My family's favorite is Fulton's Crab House. On our trip that I mentioned earlier my Fam went to DD after dinner & had our dessert there; a great big cinnamon pretzel & hot chocolate from a sidewalk vendor that my kids still talk about!

As far as reservations go it can be tricky to make them when there could be flight delays or transportation delays. I recommend making a reservation for 7:30 as a fairly safe estimate. & if you have the best case scenario & all of your transportation is quick & flawless it can never hurt to call or show up at the restaurant early to see if they have a spot open! Oh, how I love a fast, safe & efficient travel day...I'm sending some Pixie Dust your way in the hopes that you will have just that sort of perfect day!
