Our first visit to DW will be in August. We'll be staying in the FW Cabins. When we return from the theme parks at night, will we have to walk a long way from the bus to the cabin? Is there outdoor lights? Or should we bring a flashlight for the trail?

    Cynthia:

Our family loves Fort Wilderness and its cabins, and I hope your family finds that too!

I dug out my map of Fort Wilderness from our last trip in October just as a frame of reference and it confirmed what I remembered: the three bus stops in the cabin area are probably only a 2- to 3-minute walk from most cabins!  Don't worry about bringing a flashlight: the lighting in the cabin loops--as well as along the sidewalk along the main road--is ample.

But before I sign off, and because it's your first trip to Fort Wilderness, let me clarify the bus system at the Fort.  The buses that are practically at the front door of your cabin are the Fort's interior buses, and they'll take you to the front of the Fort (The Outpost) or to the back of the Fort (The Settlement).  From The Settlement, you'll walk to the pier and catch a boat to the Magic Kingdom or at the Outpost, you'll catch a second bus to every where else on the Disney campus: Epcot, Disney Studios, Animal Kingdom, Downtown Disney, etc.

I mentioned the sidewalk earlier because you may find that if you're going to The Outpost, you may choose to take the pleasant 8- to 10-minute walk from the cabins to The Outpost, especially if you're staying in loops 2700 or 2800.  Some folks choose to rent a golf cart while at the Fort so they can avoid the interior buses, but I don't recommend this if your budget-minded or enjoy the outdoors as a family.

    Wishing you a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
